Is Vegas Open? Yes, Vegas is openLas Vegas reopened on June 4th, 2020. Numerous changes have been made since reopening concerning policies and compliance for the casinos and hotels in Las Vegas due to COVID-19.

The reaction of gaming resorts to the pandemic has been something of a bellwether for the hospitality and entertainment industries, notably in the gambling hub of Las Vegas. The casinos were some of the first to close en masse in mid-March of 2020, and they subsequently led the way in crafting the protocols that would be required for them to reopen. Now, more than a year later, the news in Las Vegas bodes well for the greater travel and meetings industry.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak has just loosened restrictions statewide, thanks to a reduction in the spread of Covid-19 and an increase in vaccine distribution. As of May 1, the responsibility for creating mitigation plans has been transferred from the state to local authorities.

In Clark County, which includes the city of Las Vegas and the surrounding area, gatherings are permitted at up to 80 percent of a venue’s fire-code capacity, with three feet of social distancing required. Plans for events with more than 250 attendees must be submitted for county approval; if the plan and safety precautions are approved, those events could cap out at 80 percent of the venue’s capacity.

Meanwhile, limits for restaurants, bars, wineries, gyms, gaming floors, arcades, theme parks, museums, art galleries, aquariums, zoos, and retail stores have been increased to 80 percent of capacity. Businesses that were previously closed, including nightclubs and adult entertainment, may now reopen at 80 percent occupancy — although designated areas for dancing remain closed. The three-foot social-distancing requirement pertains to all open venues, and the mandate to wear face masks, except when eating or drinking, remains in effect.

Back to Business in Vegas

Las Vegas tourism is rebounding. Passenger traffic at McCarran International Airport soared by 60 percent from February to March, and the March traffic was up 25 percent from March 2020, the month in which the shutdowns began last year. Last week, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reported that gaming revenues exceeded $1 billion for the first time since February 2020, and were the highest they’ve been in eight years.

What’s Happening Now

The giants of the Strip have reopened all of their properties, but some have continued to operate on a limited schedule due to a shortage of demand. By state order, all guests and employees must still wear face masks whenever on the premises, except while eating and drinking. Dayclubs and nightclubs were allowed to open as of May 1, but until 60 percent of eligible Clark Country residents have been vaccinated, dedicated dancing areas within the clubs remain closed.

What’s New

Las Vegas Sands founder and CEO Sheldon Adelson passed away in January and has been succeeded by Rob Goldstein, formerly the president and COO of the company. Adelson had been in early discussions to sell the company’s Las Vegas properties — including the Venetian, Palazzo and Sands Expo — in October, and in early March a deal was announced. In a $6.25 billion transaction, VICI Properties will acquire all assets associated with the Venetian, Palazzo and Sands Expo, while Apollo Global Management will snatch up Venetian operations under a long-term partnership with VICI. All property names will remain the same.

Las Vegas Sands will focus on its casino resorts in Asia and expansion elsewhere while maintaining company headquarters in Las Vegas.
