Spectra s1 vs s2 Electric Breast Pumps Hospital Strength 2022
How are the Spectra S1 and Spectra S2 models similar?
The S1 and S2 Spectra models are double electric breast pumps. (A “double” pump means that you can pump both breasts simultaneously using it. If you’d like to pump on just one side, it’s possible to set it up to that, too.) Each has a “massage mode” to help with the letdown reflex and an “expression mode” for once your milk has let down.
The following features are included with both models:
- An auto-timer (which I have always found helpful in knowing when I should stop pumping).
- A backlight to see the settings and the timer in the dark.
- Adjustable suction and cycle control. (More on Spectra settings here.)
- The ability to check and see how many hours you’ve pumped
- A two-year warranty from the date of purchase.
More on how to do this here.

So what’s the bottom line? Should I get a Spectra S1 or S2?
Having a rechargeable battery makes life much easier – wildly if you’re exclusively pumping or will need to move around when you pump. Therefore, I’d highly recommend choosing the S1 if your budget allows it. If your insurance only covers an S2, check and see if they offer the option to upgrade. Some insurance companies provide primary pumps free through insurance and the ability to pay the price difference between the primary pump and an upgraded pump.

Whether you are a first time breastfeeding mom or a seasoned veteran, you will most likely need a pump. And a good pump is worth its weight in gold. The Spectra S2 is a relatively new brand to the market, but it’s winning the hearts of moms everywhere because of its quality and cost-effectiveness.

The Spectra S2 touts what it calls “Natural Nursing Technology”. It means that the experience of pumping with a Spectra S2 pump will be almost like breastfeeding or as close as possible.
Spectra S2 Features
Hospital Grade
This pump is recommended by lactation consultants and is widely used in hospitals. Users also prefer it to other, more expensive Hospital Grade pumps such as the Medela Symphony. Reader Favorites from Experienced Mommy!Play Video
Compact
The Spectra S2 has a convenient carrying handle, weighs 2.5 lbs, and is 7.9 x 7.9 x 6.7 inches. It is very compact and makes it easy to transport to work, on vacation, or around the house.
Cost-Effective
The Spectra S2 pump is priced very reasonably for its quality and features. The Medela Pump in Style is almost double the price of the Spectra S2. Considering the quality of the pump and the impressive volume of milk most users can achieve, this is money very well spent.
Having read many reviews it was interesting to see that this is the pump many people chose to buy after their insurance issued pump died. They did so because of recommendations from other moms or their lactation consultant and highly rated reviews. And most found the Spectra S2 to be superior to their prior pump.
Quiet as a mouse
At only 45 decibels, the Spectra S2 is a whisper-quiet pump that keeps your pumping session discreet. One mom said that she was able to pump with the Spectra S2 while sitting next to her baby while she was sleeping, which I certainly cannot imagine doing with my Medela pump. It’s loud and makes a mechanical noise with every suction. Having a super quiet pump like this would open up many pumping options for me, such as being next to my spouse in bed without waking everyone up.

Massage mode
Most pumps come with an automatic mode to imitate a baby’s rapid suckling before the letdown. In the Spectra S2, this is called massage mode. The pump gently massages instead of being more forceful like some other pumps.
It also does this without sacrificing any milk. Many moms report getting more milk out with the Spectra S2 versus their competitors (these are moms that have tried both pumps so they can compare apples to apples). It brings me to my next point

It’s efficient at what it does.
The Spectra S2 excels at getting more milk out than other brands of pumps. Users report comparing it to Medela Pump in Style and Aveda Purely Yours, and the Spectra S2 was the clear winner in volume.
Some moms thought they were having a supply crisis (which is often when a pump is purchased). When their Spectra S2 arrived, they found out that there was no supply crisis after all – it was just the inability of their previous pump to get all the milk out. I saw this story told in moms’ reviews over and over again.
The Spectra 2 is on our list as a top breast pump this year.

What is the difference between the Spectra S1 and S2?
What is the Difference Between the Spectra S1 and S2? There is ONE distinct difference between the Spectra S1 vs Spectra S2: The main difference, aside from colour, is the Spectra S1 has a built-in rechargeable battery. The S2 only comes with the AC-Adapter as a power option.
With either Spectra S1 or S2, you can independently control the suction strength and cycle speed. The MAIN DIFFERENCE is just Spectra S1 has a built-in battery that lasts for 3 hours (if fully charged) while Spectra S2 does not. As a result, Spectra s1 is much more portable than Spectra S2.
The Spectra 12 Volt Power Adapter is compatible with only the S1, S2, S3, and SG Breast Pump models with a manufacturing date between 02/2015. Included are 1 Spectrum 12 Volt Power Adapter and one detachable US outlet prong.

For obvious reasons, it can be a convenient option for work moms who need to pump to work but can not connect one in their cabin. But because of the batteries, the Mammary pump SP SPRRA S1 costs more time and weighs slightly more than the S2 spectra.
(Note: Even if they both have a “plus” in their names, these two chest pumps are the improved version of the old S1 and S2 models. Since these models Are no longer sold, the terms can be used in such away. interchangeable.)
Gentle
I remember those first few weeks of breastfeeding – the baby is just learning to breastfeed, and the latch often is not the greatest. The last thing I needed was a pump that would make me cringe and wince to use it (which was exactly what happened every time I used my Medela Pump in Style).
I was so excited to see many, many moms reporting the gentleness of the Spectra S2. They say this pump is very gentle on sore parts compared to other pumps, which can be brutal on sensitive tissues. Many moms experience soreness for various reasons, not just a lousy latch – engorgement or thrush could also be to blame. If I ever need a pump again, I will be giving the Spectra S2 a try for this reason alone.
Backflow protector
The Spectra S2 uses a closed system. It means that the tubing will never contact the milk and therefore does not need to be washed or disinfected.
It is a massive plus in my book. I remember pumping with my Medela pump and eventually needing to buy new tubing because the moisture accumulated inside the old tubing turned into a bacteria growing situation. A nuisance at its best and not safe at its worst.

Spectra S2 PLUS Soft Pink Electric Breast Pump Is Designed to Bring Confidence and Comfort to Every breastfeeding moment. S2 is quiet and intelligent for excellent pumping, with only 3 LBS weight. Our founder, Hadi Humphries, emphasized the perfect motor available for the S2 Plus, which simulates the child’s natural sucking in “Massage Mode.” Spectra Baby developed years in developing the features for S2 Plus to keep their breast milk from harmful bacteria to “Backflow Security.” We worked hard about “adjustable suction level” because it provides a more natural milk flow.

Digital screen
It is very cool. The Spectra S2‘s digital screen shows the elapsed pump time, cycle, and suction level. It is a beneficial feature for pumping moms who have a set time for the pump (like 15, 20, or 30 minutes). Even better when you’re pumping in the middle of the night while half asleep and forget to keep track of your time – the Spectra S2 does it for you.
Night Light
Speaking of the middle of the night pumping, this nifty feature on the Spectra S2 makes that easier. The night light negates the need for room lights, and with the whisper-quiet operation, it is amicable for night pumping. I appreciate how the designers of this pump went the extra mile to put these user-friendly features in.
Adaptable
For people switching to a Spectra S2 from a different pump, there are adapters available for purchase so that moms can use their existing Medela parts (flanges, etc.) with the Spectra S2 pump. It eliminates the need for re-buying parts and saves moms money. Also, some moms like other bottles or flanges better, so they would be able to keep using them with this pump.
Dishwasher safe
The Spectra S2 parts are washable in the dishwasher on the top rack for ease of use. Anything easy to clean during those hazy baby days is a giant plus in my book.

Potential Downsides
Not rechargeable
One of the most significant downsides of the Spectra S2 (although not that uncommon among pumps) is that it’s not rechargeable. So you are stuck lugging a plug and cord around, and you are at the mercy of an outlet somewhere. It does, however, seem to work well with a car charger adapter.
The trade-off of having a battery-operated pump is usually a loss of pumping strength versus the AC plugged versions.
If you need a rechargeable or battery operated pump, be sure to check out the other Spectra pumps. See the comparison chart below for details:

It May is not great for double pumping.
Some moms reported a loss of suction when attempting to pump both sides simultaneously. It did not happen to everyone so it may be a hit or miss luck.
But wait, why do I need a pump?
Many new moms assume that they won’t need a pump because they plan to breastfeed the baby. (Versus moms who exclusively pump, who need a good pump in their corner). However, this isn’t always the case.
A breastfeeding mom may need a pump for many reasons:
Engorgement
In the early days of breastfeeding, when the supply and demand are not quite regulated yet, engorgement often comes into play.
In this case, it’s essential to help relieve it by pumping some milk out. Otherwise, milk that is not moving can start causing plugged ducts or, worse yet, mastitis.

Supply issues
A pump is also beneficial when supply issues are present. A mom can feed the baby, then pump either right afterwards or a short time later. It will tell the body to make more milk by simulating a baby’s suckling. Usually, after a few days of increasing the demand in this way will also increase the supply.

At Work or away from baby
A breastfeeding mom who works will need to have a pump easily transported to and from Work. Many moms pump at lunch or other breaks at Work to replenish the milk supply for the baby.
Milk stash
Many moms like to make a stash of freezer milk for use at a later date, such as date night, etc. Having a milk stash is helpful for any unintended (or intended) time away from the baby when a mom cannot nurse.
Exclusive Pumping
Some moms cannot breastfeed or choose not to, and as such, they will need a pump to express the milk and then feed the baby. Exclusive pumping takes a lot of dedication, and having an excellent comfortable, and an effective pump will help ensure success.
Is Spectra s2 a hospital grade?
It is a hospital grade strength pump and boasts an incredible maximum suction strength of 270mmHg (+/- 15) per Spectra’s Official Site. … The Spectra S2 is also a closed system pump meaning there is a barrier between the pump tubing and the milk collection kit.
Is Spectra s2 better than Medela?
The most significant differences in suction and vacuum between the Spectra vs Medela pumps are: The Spectra S2 Plus allows moms to adjust the suction speed and strength separately, making it easy to customize pumping sessions. The hospital strength vacuum offers excellent suction.
What does cycle mean on Spectra s2?
The cycle is the number of times that the pump will simulate the speed of a baby’s suck. The number indicates the rate per minute. A higher process equals a faster pumping setting, and a lower cycle is a slower pumping setting. The Spectra S1 and S2 have cycles of 70, 54, 50, 46, 42, and 38.
Is there a difference between spectra s2 and s2 Plus? Pumps
The S2 Plus is also a hospital-strength double electric breast pump with multiple settings and backflow protection. The difference between the S1 and S2 is that the S2 is a bit smaller and lighter, and it does not have a rechargeable battery as the S1 does.
